In the highlands of Cerro Azul, Panama, this tree rose a few storeys above ground level, becoming a kind of lofty neighbour in the landscape. Its bright clusters of yellow flowers seemed to glow in daylight and still gently lit even at night with only a little illumination around it.I never knew whether it was a volunteer tree, one that appears on its own in a place where it wasn’t intentionally planted. In this piece, the scale is shifted down to the size of a small plant, but keeping the spirit of the volunteer — something that survives and takes root in alien terrain simply by chance.
